How to Keep Squirrels Out of the Garden

Squirrels are cute, but they're also a gardener's nightmare. Fortunately, there are ways to keep squirrels out of the garden, yard, and potted plants. They can wreak havoc in your garden by digging up the ground to eat seeds and bulbs or nibbling off leaves of young trees. Fortunately, there are ways to keep squirrels out of the garden, yard, and potted plants

- you want to avoid planting at-risk trees because if those are an attractive food source then the problem may come back again next year

- put some bird feeders out so that the birds take away their attention as well as chewing on things--it's important to know how long it takes before they give up trying altogether; sometimes different foods work better

- simply by planting a few plants-like cucumbers, corn, or squash--that are not the type of food squirrels typically eat in your garden can help to avoid them coming into contact with other more attractive ones

- Covering parts of the garden with wire mesh or chicken-wire

- You can also hang a radio on a string that plays recordings of predator calls, like those made by hawks

- Repelling them with pepper spray will make some stay away but not all

- There are also repellents that smell like natural predators, or you can use home remedies such as garlic sprayed around the garden in order to keep squirrels away.

- The best way to keep squirrels out of the garden is with a little time and effort, as well as patience.

- Know that it might take some trial and error before you find what works for your individual situation.

- Use wire mesh to cover the potted plants.

- Protect garden vegetables with a deer fence or chicken wire fencing around your entire vegetable plot and put up an electric fence on top of that for squirrel protection.

- Install motion sensor sprinklers in sensitive areas where you have fruit trees, hanging baskets, etc.

- Keep bird feeders away from the vegetable garden.

- Do not put out any food scraps for animals and do not leave pet or human food where it can be accessed by wildlife.

- Install a roof over your garden if it is in an area where you know that the wild animals can jump or climb up on top and access it.

- Plant thorny shrubs around potted plants for additional protection from wildlife as well as rabbits and deer.

- If you have a lot of squirrels that are really causing damage, consider using an ultrasonic device to get them away from the property.

-a dog or a cat in the yard can also help keep squirrels away

- place a wire mesh fence around your garden to make it difficult for squirrels and other animals to get in

-using a live or fake owl is another solution to deter animals from the property

-a live trap can also be used to catch the animal

-once they are caught, you can relocate them a great distance away from your home or business.

-consult with an expert about how best to get rid of squirrels on the property because there might be other ways that work better than these mentioned above for this particular type of animal and environment

- use the methods above first before moving on to using harsh chemicals. Chemicals can be harmful, especially if they leach into groundwater supplies or harm wildlife that may drink from nearby water sources.

- If you think there is no other option than to use harsh chemicals, remember that there are safer alternatives.

- Products like the Humane Animal Repellent will emit a harmless smell and taste in an animal's mouth when they try to eat it.

Hi! I'm a friendly squirrel. We're just trying to live here and you are trying to make it difficult. You put up those spikes but we can still easily navigate over them, so they don't really work. And those nets? They're super fun to play in--we always wake up with a new toy thanks to you! What do you think about this idea: an electric fence! The way it will work is that when we come close enough, our little rodent hearts will be shocked by electricity and make us run away scared--you know how much we hate being zapped by something like that. Sounds crazy right? I know, but I think it would be the perfect way to keep us out of your garden. I really hope you'll give my idea a try! If you live in a place that allows you to set up an electric fence. It can't get any worse than what you are doing right now and we're tired of chasing each other in circles around your yard.
